Correct. I *am* old. But, WISE; and that only comes with age!

Last time I heard the term siggy, it was spelled ciggy, and meant cigarette. In this instance, I *knew* that couldn't be right.

PS Thanks for bringing me into the 21st century.

Don't worry it is long, shinny, and confusing path but we will get you there, and your only old if you feel it and you don't sound like you feel it to me. Not with that lot of hens to look after.

I think every family has one.
Most people that act like that are lacking something in their lives, they are unhappy.
Don't let them bring you down :)

Most of my relatives either farm or aren't many generations off the farm, so most don't see anything unusual about us raising chickens. Most don't even think it's unusual for us to treat them as pets. Some did think it odd that we had them in our family room when they were young, but I'm not the only one in our family to do that either.

Thanks! I don't feel it ... except when I first get out of bed in the morning.

And, I *know* I don't act it because so many people tell me to "grow up".

So, just stumbled across this and it's hilarious.

We haven't had chickens for very long, but several friends have commented... oh my god, you EAT them?

My favorite story along similar lines has to do with the state fair. Every year, I try to volunteer some time at the birthing center, where a variety of baby farm animals are either housed for the week or even born so the general public can see them. Some of the local small dairies send cows to calve at the fair. God bless these ladies, they just drop their calves with 300+ people gawking at them.

The majority of people are ASTOUNDED to find out that a cow has to give birth in order to start milking. They are even more distraught to find out that the calves are hand reared. No, that milk in the plastic jug doesn't just spontaneously appear on your grocery store shelves every morning!

Mind you, this is Kansas. Where I grew up in NJ I could see things like this happening but I thought that we were rural enough that more people would know about their food.

My father was in the Air Force, so I wasn't raised on a farm, but I was FLOORED when I found out so many people didn't know this. Where have they been living??

I will admit I never knew this (i knew they had to give birth before this, but for a while I didn't know...).... But in my offence I thought that the dairies would be overloaded with calves if the cows had to give birth so what would they do with the calves? So my mind thought they figured out a way to make the cow come into milk w/o giving birth

Hey, you worked at the birthing center!?! My grandpa used to work for Purina so he had a stand at the state fair every year, and we had to walk through the birthing center. Truthfully, it made me sad to see all the people watching. Especially the little kids running and screaming and such. Although, it was always worth it when somebody puked...

City slickers...You might call us red necks (Dear People of Rural Chase County, stop acting like redneck hillbillies and people will stop assuming that we are) but at least we can hold our funnel cakes and nitrogen ice cream!

They probably have found a way that involves injecting them with nasty, artificial hormones. YUK!! Poor cows. Hey, at least you figured out the cows had to give birth, first; you were just stuck on what you saw as a potential problem! Shows you're thinking!

Pointing at the green egg a kid said "why do u dye the eggs then put them back?" I laughed and told him that the chickens made the eggs that way. He said no way! They know how to use Easter dyes.!?!? lol
