Dumped Ducks Report - Connecticut

It's the difficult, sad part of life on earth right now. I am sharing this because I feel that if we can all be reminded that we can help - at least sometimes, in some cases, we will get some additional traction, and learn how we can all do more to bless the world of plants, and animals.

My little wheels are turning as to what I might be able to do with my limited resources. First, educating people - like the story of the starfish, remember?

I sent the thread link to Carolina water fowl and they gave me the link to majestic water fowl Amiga will they help? What about on the Conn thread maybe if enough folks went joint effort, got some at least would get picked up and taken home. This is heartbreaking to say the least.

Like the news thing I told you all about where this community was going to have a pro hunter come in and kill all the Canada geese boy did the news pick that up and alot of people showed up to stop it. Still waiting to hear how that came out.

As far as I know the inn is full at Majestic. This will need to be individuals with the calling and resources. Adding a few ducks to the flock will work for some. Some ae good at working with town staff. Some have a few extra dollars for real food, etc.

Thanks everyone for your concern about these ducks and geese. I am trying to think of ways to help them. The fastest way to help them would just get people able and willing to adopt them to simply go to the park, catch them, and take them home. Other than that...

My first thought was, I know there are a couple of rescue/sanctuaries in Connecticut and New England that specialize in farm animals. Many of these focus more on horses but a few keep chickens and other smaller animals. I found a website of one yesterday that kept many animals, but their "contact us" page was about adopting animals, not asking if they had room for more... I will keep looking.

Another idea I recently had was to find some people into "permaculture." For those of you who don't know, permaculture is a kind of farming technique/philosophy- kind of like, organic, free-range, pastured, non-gmo, etc. A famous slogan by people who practice permaculture is "you don't have too many slugs, you have too few ducks." Basically permaculture does not like pesticides and would rather use ducks or other natural control. So I was thinking that if I (or anyone else) could find a permaculture group in the area and tell them about this, I think that someone may be more than happy to pick up a few quiet drakes to help with the garden. Since most of the ducks that get dumped are drakes, I think this could work in finding them homes. To be honest I think this is a really good idea, but I'm having trouble finding ways to contact these people. If anyone is a member of a permaculture club/site/forum, maybe you could mention dumped ducks? Even if they live far away from here, it might convince them to check their own local parks, where there may be other ducks.

What do you think? Any more ideas?

I truly think there are enough homes for these animals. It's just finding them that's difficult. There are tons of dog rescue groups, and tons of cat rescue groups, but other animals? Not so much.

I do not live close to the park and have only been there a few times. However I will be trying to go at least one more time, sometime next week. I will bring some corn or other snacks for the domestics- anything besides bread and garbage! I know they will be eating a lot of both today and tomorrow, since a festival is going on.

With a ferris wheel, parade and other chaos, I worry about traffic and animals being chased into the road....

Thank you again everybody. Every little bit helps. If anyone is looking to buy or breed ducks, you might want to check out nearby parks. You may find there are ducks who need homes, maybe even of the breed you were looking for...

I just received this email from Carolina Water fowl:

You can ask the person who posted to contact us. If she is willing to catch some of the birds we might be willing to help with placement.

There's help if someone is willing to do the leg work. .I just received an email from Jennifer Gordon she said to contact the [email protected] if something can be worked out. She is out of the country but others there are willing to help.

Thank you, Miss Lydia. I emailed them. Unfortunately I don't think I can really do the "leg work"- all I could do is catch them and put them in carriers. I couldn't drive them anywhere or keep them at my house (afraid they would spread disease to my own birds). Someone else would have to be there to do that.

I don't live in that park's town/city, so I can't go there too often.

And thank you too Amiga for sharing on facebook. I don't have a facebook but I know how valuable they can be for sharing information and getting people focused. Also thank you for teaching me the term "Permaculturist" I did not know that word before.

Now I will wait and see if the Caroline rescue emails me back.

Also, does anyone know about uploading pictures? I thought that you needed to make 10 posts first, but I just looked that up and can't find it anywhere, so maybe I'm getting my forums confused. When I do upload them, do you think I should post them here, on the Connecticut thread, the goose thread... or all three? I don't want to get in trouble for spam, but at the same time I want as many people to see this as possible.

ETA 2 things:

First, I got an email response from the Carolina Waterfowl Rescue. There's not much they can do, being so far away, and I wasn't much help, sadly. However she said this:

"I would suggest you post on the face book group "pet ducks and geese" and see if maybe you can find someone closer to help with them."

So that is something to think of. I don't have a facebook so I can't do that (if anyone else could that would be great!) but I will look at other duck and goose pet sites right now.

The other thing I want to add is: ugh! I just found out there's going to be FIREWORKS at the park for the festival! The poor birds.

ETA: For anyone wondering, I have uploaded pictures and more news on the Connecticut thread.
