Hi BYC,

I'm going to try to treat a duck with Duramycin 10 with the soggy bread trick (i.e. soaking bread in DM 10 solution and then feeding to the duck). Does anyone have experience with the ratios?

Here was my plan:
- correct does is 800 mg
- I figure she might ingest half a cup of water (or 1/32 of a gallon) through the bread
- according to directions, a full packet will make 12.5 gal at 800 mg / gal, or 50 mg / cup
- if instead, I mixed one packet with 1 gallons of water, concentration would be 625 mg / cup
- if she ingests half of that, she'd only get 312 mg

Can someone confirm that this is how others use the soggy bread trick?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers,
Jon

But for most people who use 1 tbsp per gallon, their intention is for the bird to drink that whole gallon, right? If I'm only going to be able to get a pint or so into the duck, via the bread, doesn't it need to be a much more concentrated pint of solution?

From everything I can gather, 1 tbsp contains 800mg, which is the recommended amount for the duck to consume. So essentially I need to get 800mg into the duck, whether it is the duck consuming 800mg in a gallon, or 800mg in a quart, right?

Most ducks or chickens won't consume a whole gallon of water in one day. The manufacturer suggests this ratio, and each chicken or duck should consume enough of the medicine for it's weight with normal drinking in one day. I can't really tell you how much to give in bread.

Old thread, but leaving this here because I just had to dose a single bird that is not eating/drinking on her own. The dose is 10mg/lb daily in divided doses (twice a day is fine). My 5-lb bird needs 50 mg daily.

1/4 tsp. powder is approx 66 mg tetracycline. I mixed 6 ml warm water to 1/4 tsp. powder until dissolved, then administered 3 ml. every 12 hours. Mix fresh daily. Treating for enteritis, so 3-5 day administration. Don't forget to give additional fluids throughout the day away from this medicine (absorbs better away from food). A bird would usually drink 1-2 cups of water daily. Also be prepared to add probiotics after course of antibiotic is done.
