duramycin-10 tertacycline hydrochoride soluable powder

TSC recommended we use the above antibotic with our layers for the first 3 weeks. We will be getting roasters from 4H next week and want to know if this is necessary for the meat birds or if we can go with the vitamin add in instead. I am not a die hard organic but would love to provide the healtliest meat for my kids as possible. But also do not want to loose my flock to disease. Suggestions?

During the time my meaties and other chicks are in the brooder they get electrolytes and tetracycline in their water, usually 3-4 weeks.

Yes TSC sold it to me--but I was buying layers at the time.

In my opinion, they were selling you this to make a sale. I see no reason to give an animal an antibiotic for prevention, especially duramycin. What are you trying to prevent? Most TSC employees are not as knowledable as they lead you to believe. I was looking to buy pasture seed for my goat pasture there, and they recommended one that had white clover in it. Come to find out, after I planted it, that goats do not care for white clover. I know it's hard when you are uniformed, but be careful when taking their advise. To answer your question, I would add the vitamins for the broilers.

We don't give medication of any kind to any of our meat birds and our layers would only receive medication if they needed it for an illness (so far, none have in the years we have been keeping layers). Our broilers do get a vitamin mix.
