Hello!
It's my first time raising meat birds. A couple friends were raising Kosher Kings and they needed to buy a few more
to get the big discount. I signed on for 15 chicks.
We received them May 29. I was planning on processing them at 10 weeks. I didn't want huge birds.
I fed them New Country Organic feed that was soaked overnight. I was also feeding my layer chicks at the same time, so I really can't say what exactly what the cost per bird was. For the last three weeks In went through 120#.
At 10 1/2 weeks the cockerels were about 5.25#, the hens around 4#. I wanted the weight to be about 1 1/2 less. I was hoping for smaller birds. I'm just a one person household.
I have to say that this is the most flavorful chicken that I've ever eaten. I just spatchcocked a bird, no brining or spices, just salt and pepper. It's absolutely delicious.
The last week before processing, in addition to their regular food I fed them olive oil-cornmeal herb cake sweetened with molasses every day. Coated with some peach jam that has been in the freezer for a couple years and needed to get used up or thrown out.
I have no idea what makes this chicken so good but I'm definitely going to do it again. Next time I'll do more chickens for 7-8 weeks instead of 10+.
I can recommend Kosher King chickens just from my experience.
