dust bath materials

I wish you could see the "tubs" they build for their dust baths. I have at least 5 or more spots around the yard. They love dirt but I also burnt a lot of wood for them to use.

I didn't see this anywhere so i'll ask here.
what about ash from a pellet stove? we've just been tossing it, but if could make a dust bathing place for my hens i know they would love it and what a great way to get rid of the ash..I know there is some sort of glue on the pellets to hold them together but wouldn't that just burn off?
thanks

Mine love the sand by the house foundation. They got freaked out when I sprinkled DE, so I have to make sure to mix it in so they don't notice.

When my one girl was brooding a few chicks, I gave them a letter sized box of sand they loved. Here they are are going at it.

They do dig holes in the lawn when they are in cooped up in the tractor. I would love to get them one of these .

I use Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth (DE). I used to sprinkle it everywhere. Now I just put it in their favorite dusting spots, coop and run. When the birds were younger I made them a sandbox out of an under the bed storage container filled with sand and DE sprinkled in the sand.
