I am thinking of putting a "sand box" or something of the sort in my chicken pen for dust bathing. The reason is because sometimes we get a lot of rain and the run becomes muddy and they can't dust bathe. The "sand box" will have a bottom and be covered. My question is what would be the best material to put in it for dust bathing? Sand? Dirt? Something else?

It's best to leave the bottom open for drainage. Use coarse contractors sand from Lowes or Home Depot or other building supply store. That's how we did ours and it works great.

: DI use equal parts of sand, top soil and spent coffee grounds in my dusting boxes and they just love it. The local coffee bar gives me large bags of the spent grounds, which I dry out before adding to their dust boxes. The coffee grounds exfoliate the skin too.
