dust bathing ?

My big girls free range and dust bath when ever where ever they want I have silkies in a coop with a large run. I heard somewhere they could dust bath in ash is that correct?
I have a wood stove and clean ash out of it a couple times a week could this ash be usefull I have been dumping it.
