Sanity is subjective
Sand should be cleaned daily of poop. My yard is a swamp, literally. Southern Georgia is one of the wettest places I've been. At my house the water table is 19" below surface. Nothing drains. I switched from sand to DL and haven't had any issues. Once a week I add about a wheel barrow of grass clippings or leaves. Just uncerimoniously dump in the middle. The chickens go nuts digging through looking for tidbits and do the work of spreading for you. Half of my run is covered, and with the amount of scratching they do it stays well mixed and dry. Even with the rain and wet there's no smell, and I have yet to see anyone in the coop with poopy feet. I highly recommend DL it's clean, easy, and low maintenance.
