Dyed chicks

Really? I had hilighted ones in my order last year and they never were picked any worse than anyone else
I would consider that as having had good luck in your case.

Usually everything that stands out for whatever reason will pique their interest and they will start to "investigate and probe deeply" in their own special way...

Henna is natural...I hennaed my hair for three years..pretty permanent. Henna has been used for centuries. It was also used to kill lice way back when. When my grandmother was young she used rit dye and colored her white cat chartreuse blue..she had the cat in her car one day and someone busted out the window and stole it. That was many years ago. I see nothing wrong with it as long as it isn't in their eyes. And I'd say whether it is legal or not..depends on the state you live in. Some things are legal in some states and some states are down right anal...

Here in South Florida we have chickens in trailer parks (their not allowed there but no one cares) but their not allowed on a property that is legalllyyyy registered as a homestead because its in Residential neighborhood - but the neighborhood has no hoa - so it’s code enforcement who forces compliance or go to court and some one older might not want to deal with legal issues (my grandma for instance) - so they just get rid of their chickens ☹️

yet I work in backyards tri-county and many other people own regardless of laws - self sufficiency shouldn’t be something we move people away - many laws are absolutely absurd ! But yes of course some are in play for safety as well

Anywho - I think if I make my own dye and do it when our chill has gone away or on a hot day she may not mind it , her chest fluff is a purplish from sleeping under the mulberry tree - of you’ve ever had a mulberry tree and chickens then you know exactly what I mean - they love them more than melon!!! - I’ll get a photo - pictures worth a thousand words

That’s why I think the law is stupid.

If someone sees her colored even slightly I literally just learned the other day I could face a fine and jail time (I’m actually a little bit scared to post the photo now lol !)
I’d love to color her fully if she would allow me !
But
I don’t think we should fine people 500$ And put them in jail for 60 days for dying their personal chickens (as long as their using “non toxic” coloring). AND - AS LONG AS Their not sold - or intended for sale.

Selling them colored i don’t think is fair or appropriate - because ur basically finding a way to dump them for a profit - not cool - but owning them colored should be different with the mentioned “non toxic” coloring

I totally agree as long as your animal seems to allow it - and doesn’t struggle clearly showing they don’t like it - will be depending factor whether one should follow through with the process

saying it’s like putting your boy in pink - when they make pink collared shirts and button downs for boys - and baby blue clothes for girls - I think is a silly response . Because someone else wouldn’t put their boy in pink and they* don’t like it - doesn’t mean it’s wrong and somebody else and that person shouldn’t like it - there is very limited cute clothing options for boys and we shouldnt shame ‘the people’ for that or take those already limited options away from children! Thus I think that was goofy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I too have put misters and fans on them because it gets hot in south Florida ! I’ve neverrrrr had any bird mind it - they always run through it on purpose and use it like they do with sand - they fluff up , shake in it , and do it again
I only want to dye my one white silkie because she’s our only ‘pet’ chicken , she’s really my daughters chicken and they have a different type of bond!!! Only seen ducks Listen and bond like this ! she comes inside , goes on car rides , follows my daughter eveywheree , they are ALWAYS side by side! She comes running to her name! (Chickaletta) amazing chicken !
She already wears bows - not aprons as strings seems dangerous! But for photo op and quick take off sounds cute!
At one point, it was common for layer-type cockerel chicks to be dyed various colors and sold at Easter time. That is now illegal in some places, but still happens in some other places.
There were two problems with that.
Some people considered it bad for the chicks (depending on the dye and the methods, it might be bad or harmless.)
And it specifically made chicks appeal to people that would buy them but probably not take good care of them. The people most likely to buy a dyed chick are the same people least likely to know or learn proper chicken care. So this was bad for the chicks, just because of who was likely to buy them.
(I remember thinking that, as a purely business decision, it was a clever thing for the hatcheries to do: they took the male Leghorn chicks that are least likely to be sold, dyed them, and sold them instead of killing them. But of course being profitable is not the same as being good for the chicks.)
As far as dyeing adult chickens, there are some places that have banned dyeing of any animals. That's based on people deciding it is bad for animals to be dyed, which would include all the various reasons given so far in this thread.
no I understand peoples different opinions about dying them colorful - I was told by a friend he had a basket of colored chicks as a child but I had never heard of such a thing and also never looked into it at that time - fast forward to now and my chicken is purple so I looked up purple chickens 😂 - to my surprise it was a big thing originally starting with Agro. and apparently it’s still a HUGE CONTROVERSY
I meant “what’s all the beef with chickens?” more as a overall chicken question - even non chicken owner feel obligated to decide if other locals can have chickens or not (or at least attempt to fight them with laws) - and it seems the laws change too fast to pick a place to live according to the laws
I mean my friends service dog has a rainbow tail🤣 there’s animal made dyes that won’t harm them and it’s pretty much mashed up veggies/ fruits extract. I’d say it’s ok but I wouldn’t (and chickens are too squirmy for this🤣)
Yesss - if u have ever used a beet in your food everything is PINK even hands and mouth
Mulberry for purple
Pea flower for blue etc..
I’ve seen painted ponies at parties we’ve gone to - and people’s dogs on the street - but always thought any spray paint or “non toxic”, “animal safe paint” was a lie - basically any thing that I don’t make myself has additives and extra ingredients I don’t want or like
food dye is “safe” to ingest in small amounts but I don’t intend on smothering/dunking/drenching in food dye
I just wanted to know what was everyone opinion - and no surprise, their still as mixed as the older threads asking the same question
I just guess i never see a actual point in doing so. even it being the safest ever, why though? I mean, if anything it causes more harm then good and can potentially be very stressful. I suppose your mind is already set on it no matter what, so i guess go for it. i would never though
It is done so people purchase the chicks as an impulse buy. Thinking some kid will be delighted with it. They don't seem to think any farther than that.
Years ago I knew a young couple with 2 young children. They lived in a 2 bedroom, 1 bath apartment. The grandparents gave each child a colored chick for Easter. About 1 month later the Mom called me in tears. The chicks had been living in the bath tub and were getting too big. They had no yard or porch to move them to and she was upset, not wanting to kill or dump them, but was unable to keep them. She begged me to take them. We agreed and poor thing she was so relieved, as were her children.
All this because some stupid people made an impulse buy, that thought was cute, without asking the parents first.
So I am very against coloring chicks for purposes of selling them at Easter.
Yes, but not everyone dyes chicks only for Easter sales
