I will see what I can find out... the biggest thing I would say would be stress, on chicks which are already hatched (I'm assuming).

Here is one link

It is also illegal in some states, as someone might have already mentioned.

Dying chicks colors is not bad for their health as long as the owner can take care of them. In some places it is illegal to dye chicks because it makes them look like easter toys and encourage impulse buying.
If only everyone would realize that chicks are living creature and not throw-away easter gifts! Then we could have such cute colorful chicks. But until we can, I believe all chicks should remain their natural colors.

It is illegal in my city! (If I plan on selling them)
Chicks are constantly picking and preening... I think it would encourage them to peck and pick at eachother. They can pick on a weaker chick to death.
I would not reccomend dying chicks...

If its done correctly it is harmless and stress free for the chicks. The do look amazing being bright colours. However, it should never be done in order to sell them. Only do it to your own pets.

I used to dye my silkies and they looked fantastic. The pink ones looked like candy floss! I dyed them purple, pink, blue and green. I also used to dye my white fantail doves.

There is nothing wrong with doing this at all, the birds don't care and because they look so good they get lots of attention from friends and visitors.

For the chickens simply use same dye, such as food colouring, fill a bucket with warm water and the dye (wear gloves), then dip in the bird and massage the colour into the body gently. Then pat dry with an old towel. Then take out and allow to dry in a warm place. As I used to bath the chickens for shows then were used to the baths, and they thought it was just a normal bath.

For the doves, I just added the food colouring to the bathing water tray. The doves would take a bath on their own and then come out coloured.

The only think you must be careful about is not let them out in the rain, as the colours will run and their feathers are not as waterproof with the colour on. (not that silkies feathers are very waterproof anyway).

The bird will go back to its normal colour once it moults.

You can use kool-aide and a water spray bottle (no sugar) if you need to dye your chicks. You can do many colors, rainbow, polka dots, any color you can buy. NO HARM TO CHICK
