Generally, eagles don't seem too interested in domestic ducks, but if you have an eagle that has discovered it can eat your ducks, he will be back. All you can do is to keep your birds in covered runs except when you are right there with them.
I'm curious to know if deserthotwings is willing to pay the tens of thousands of dollars in fines that his advice would cost you.
Told my husband I wasn't sure what I would have done had I gotten there before the eagle flew off....he said only two words, "Federal offense!"
Been "discussing" the need for covered run since last September. Hubby said eagles couldn't carry off a domestic duck, so wouldn't bother. I disagreed. He believes me now. Ongoing discussion about lengths we need to go to to protect the ducks from predators. Guess I need to learn to build the duck runs myself.......
Yeah, we saw it. Had come back in the house to get more feed. Husband saw him standing in duck run and said, "There's an eagle out there. Full run from house to duck run - too late. He tried to carry him off, but apparently dropped what was left. Watson must have put up quite a fight in the brief moments he had. It was awful. Then the eagle hung out in nearby trees for most of the rest of the day with crows dogging him.
Gotta love those crows! They are my new heros - and I used to think they were just obnoxious. If I had just paid attention to the fact that the crows were out there and squawking before I came back in the house.....
Well... some Native American cultures are now being allowed to hunt the Bald Eagle... just food for thought... Know any Native Americans who can come over to your house and do some hunting?
Yes - Leave it to a man to not get the job done... He can't help it though... it is something in the "Man brain" that makes them wait and wait and wait... Don't give him too, too much grief - I am sure he feels really bad right about now!
