Is that a feeder rat or a fancy rat? Or is there a difference? One of the kids wants one, I can get a feeder rat for a buck or two from a snake breeder, or a fancy rat for twenty five from a rat breeder..

As long as they are 5 or so generations breed from wild rats they are "fancy" rats. I paid $14.00 for Earl at Petco. The sales associate asked me if I was buying as a feeder or companion. As long as the feeder rat you are looking at looks healthy and the breeder is reputable, go for it, they are one and the same. I just wouldn't suggest buying an albino rat (all white with red eyes). I've read the can have health problems and aren't as intelegent and social.

You are welcome. The first rats I ever bought many decades ago, were from a pet feed store. The girl in the shop cried with joy when I told her I was buying as a pet. They were just as fancy as Earl . And yes Earl has QUITE a personality! Hes super sweet too.
