early sexing by comb/feathers

Howdy.

I've been trying to learn as much as I can from this site, but there is a lot to read, so I thought I'd just post a question!

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to tell gender on young (2-3 week old chicks) based on combs & feathers? I have several that are right about the same age - some have much more noticeable combs. The ones without the combs have longer tail feathers. Are the ones with combs roos? And the ones with longer feathers hens?

The person I bought my chicks from sexed them based on feathers - - - I got 4 pullets and he was 100 % accurate. So, yes it can be done.

idk abut the feathers but the combs you can always tell
the combed one are roos

The only times this works is if the breeder (s) have feather bred them to have either long feather or short feathers depending on sex... Some breeds are very easy because it is a standard....Other breeds have not this advantage... For feather-linked sexing... compare your birds at 5 or 6 days.. after this or much before this and there may not be an advantage available. Females tend to feather out quicker and have two rows of even feathers that gradually get longer going out from the Axel feather. Males have one row to the inside of the axel feather and they are distiguishably shorter. Hope this helps... Cochins are one that are "feather-linked"
