Earned my right to be a carnivore for the first time today. So far, I know that I have a right to Chicken and Fish and Seafood. As for Beef, Pork, etc, I'm gonna need a farm first (or just a differently zoned property).

I guess the whole dressing and such gets easier after the first time? It's not traumatic or anything in that light, I just want to make sure that next time I have a much better idea of how to properly butcher it for proper cuts of meat, etc.

All in all, it wasn't nearly as bad as I feared.

Good for you! Doesn't it give you more respect for all the folks who have processed allllllll the other chickens you've ever had the pleasure to have eaten? And a greater appreciation for the meat that finds its way to your plate, makes you not want to waste a morsel!

You'll learn something with each session to make the next one go even easier. Just knowing what tools & supplies you'll need in advance, and perhaps keeping them in one place, will help for next time.

Enjoy your well-earned meal!

It definitely gives me more respect for the people that have to do this all the time to eat, or even worse, those that work in slaughter houses for a living. I had heard something about how people who work in slaughter houses have to be rotated out to different positions every few months to prevent emotional trauma or some such?

The only creepy thing after was the realization of hwo everything I eat comes froma n animal. I was sitting in my room last night petting my dog and I could feel his muscles under his fur, and it made me think of the weird distinction that are put up between "companion pets" and "food pets". I just ate one of my chickens, but I know I couldn't eat my dog, yet they are both made of meat, and both considered food in some parts of the world.

Maybe I should rethink my stance on eating pork if they're truly as smart / companionable as dogs?

I think everyone should learn to have respect for the food they eat - about 85% of the meat my family lives on is either raised by me, immediately family or harvested during hunting season. I have taught my 2 children how to respect the animals that feed us both while they are alive and during the entire process of dispatching them through butchering.
