Greetings!
Well, what do you do when the neighbor drops by one evening right after Easter and brings you a box of 6 baby Chicks ? UHHHH !!!!

A month later, we have all survived one another , living together in our living room with 6 baby chicks has been intersting to say the least.

We have done lots of research, bought feed, cleaned and cleaned and cleaned their box and play pen area!!! And have fallin' madly in LOVE with all 6! They are too cute!
We have Rhode Island Reds, we have been taking lots of pictures and watched them grow so fast. They love attention and Oats!

So, How do you build a Coop with materials on hand? We have read the articles on this website and the forums, great information here and very helpful.

Looking forward to meeting others who are raising Chickens. We are interested in other breeds as well.

Not sure about your available space for building a coop, but these will be large chickens and the first thing I did was figure how much space they'd need. I had my RIR chicks under a brood light in the garage (I used the woodbox from our fireplace and covered it with hardware cloth). Meanwhile, I threw together a shelter close by where they are now. Shelter from wind and rain and protection from predators are the main concerns. Get them out of the house before they get too crowded and start pecking at each other. Good luck.

I love some of the pallet coops I've seen built by members here on BYC... those seem to be readily available... .You need at least 24 square feet for 6 birds, but I'd build a coop that is at least 8X8... eventually chicken math will hit you.

Welcome to BYC from BC!

We lived with our girls in our living room for two months. Watch out for that dust!! It's very fine, and gets EVERYWHERE!!! It builds a good bond though. Good luck with your coop!
