I have been given 6 hens over the last two years. If you have land, you can be a chicken rescuer. These hens have free range of 3/4 acre of lawn and trees. At least that is what my friends and family think. Anyway, they are not in a coop. They roost in the trees at night. When it rains they have places with covers to stay dry and get there feed. I feel like I am on an Easter Egg hunt many days. When I do find their laying spots, I place a plastic egg in it to encourage them to come back. Sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't. Any ideas? I even built a laying box. Only one uses it.

The best bet is to get them a coop and keep them in it for a week or two. After their stint in the coop most of them will head back there to lay their eggs. It's really better to lock them up at night anyhow. Eventually the preds will find them and you'll start losing birds.
