I have a one and only EE pullet, she's hanging around the egg nests on & off all day, but I have never seen her nestled down in one. She comes and goes and cries a lot. I keep finding a brown egg that is either hers or an older hen starting to lay again - I haven't seen an older hen in the coop , but I can't watch it all day! The flock is free range, 5 pullets that she was raised with are laying (variety of breeds). Question: Meyer Hatchery EE, I know there is a chance she will lay brown instead of blue or green shades. Is it 50/50? more, less? Kinda like roosters in a straight run? Hoping to have better chances than that! Muffuletta is her name, sweetest chicken ever!

If both of her parents carry one blue egg gene she will lay blue or green eggs. If only one parent carries the blue egg gene and the other carries no blue egg genes (white) then she will lay a white, cream, or brown egg. I have a Silkie x Easter Egger pullet who hatched from a blue egg but lays white eggs.

Thanks Brahma! I pretty much know what makes the blue/green colors, just wondering if hatcheries are the worst way to get a blue/green egg layer by chance. I see what you're saying though: the hatchery could hatch only blue or green eggs to sell EE chicks, yet still be selling EE's that don't lay the color they were born from. Pretty chicken you have there!
