I have never had chicken that wasn't in a restaurant or grocery store. I am very excited to finally have some! We are about a month away. It will be a very special day when we have that first chicken. I know we all will truly appreciate it, knowing we raised it and loved it. The ones we will have to process are BRs. One is looking pretty meaty already (probably more fluff than meat lol), the other a runt. I am struggling a little with the thought of killing our birds, but the benefits to my family keep me focused. We have three kids that I want to see eating clean, hormone free meat. I also want them to appreciate where their food comes from. This has been a tremendously enlightening experience for our whole family.I stopped buying chicken at the store months ago. It really is so bland.![]()
What is another interesting phenomenon is that meat has become a heavy staple in the American diet over the last 50 years or so. Meat in my grandma's day was used sparingly with the old folks obtaining their protein from eggs and homemade dairy products. Allergies to these products didn't become an epidemic until the dairy industry started putting additives and pasteurization into products. Today many products/produce are lightly radiated to kill "bacteria" thus destroying most or all of the benefits of the food we purchase -- not to mention the nutritionally depleted soils vegetables are grown in so that growers have to chemically put additives into the soils. Home gardening and chicken flock eggs is our main source of protein and veggies with abundant harvests canned or frozen for winter meals. We have eliminated GMO, soy and "gluten free" since these products are empty non-nutritional calories. Nothing like homemade tomato sauces and for example we use string squash or slivered zucchini strips as spaghetti noodles - what a hoot! You are so on the right track with your family!
