Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

Not mine Lynda! Only Eos was a "I THINK I see green in the legs" chick.

Persephone at about 12 days (couldn't find a clear picture of her earlier). I'm pretty sure Andromeda was the same. Unfortunately I don't have any good leg pictures of the 2015 chicks when they were that young.

@CatMom 's chick at lower left looks to have similarly colored legs. Perhaps the others will "grow into their green"

I think you're right. I went back and looked and the green was showing before 4 weeks. I remember my son asking if they were going to have green legs like the other EEs, so I knew they weren't green when we got them.

You can kind of see the legs on the 3 day olds. Buster Posey was loving her new babies!

About 12 days. Sort of grayish legs.

Around 3 weeks, looking greenish!

Here's a picture of mama hen and her two chicks. They hatched July 22 from one blue egg and one pink/beige egg, but I don't know which was from which. The mama is very protective and keeps the other hens and roosters away from the chicks. The little striped one has escaped the chicken yard half a dozen times, but I have double fencing, so she got trapped by the outer fence. Thank heavens my dogs weren't around, or she probably would have been a little snack. I'm assuming the chicks are both girls, even though they are too young to tell. . . aren't they? I can't get closer to the chicks to take a better picture since they are very skittish. Everyone here says that EEs are friendly, but mine won't let me come close. Love this thread Tina
They're still a bit too young to tell and it's difficult to see any detail in the pic. I would post pics again in a couple of weeks. It has been my experience that the chicks raised by a broody are far more skittish than those raised in a brooder. We incubated and hatched several EEs this spring and all are very friendly and trusting. Then our 2 Cuckoo Marans went broody and hatched out several more. These chicks are very skittish and are just beginning to warm up to us. It wasn't until mama left them to fend for themselves that we were able to build trust.

Does it look like a 2 month old easter egger?
Yellow legs and not much of a comb at all...(like my 4 month old "hatchery ameraucanas"...feathers are like theirs, too.
The one pictured has muffs and beard with slate legs, the other has green tinted legs and no beard or muffs.

first pic is of the chick in question at a few days old.

Pic of one of the hatchery ameraucanas that I think are easter eggers? Does this one look like a pullet?

and finally pics of the chick in question, 2 months old:

I thought it might be a buttercup or Welsummer but the people over on those threads say no...lol. So I'm still searching for the answer. Thanks everyone!!

added a pic of a welsummer I found on the internet, looks so similar to mine...

kjscortez, the first one looks like an EE pullet. Very pretty! Second one doesn't look like an EE at all. It is not a Welsummer either... wrong comb and coloring is not right. What ever it is, it looks like a pullet.

Thank you! It doesn't really matter what she is, but I'd like to know just the same. She's a feed store purchase...the other two ened up being a black crested polish and a brahma.

That looks about right. Perhaps the light colored birds show the green later. Eos surely took her time whereas the chipmunks were pretty obviously grayish green very early.

That is my experience as well. Zorra kept the chicks she fostered well guarded and they were not to be touched. She was VERY alert to any possible danger. As a result (I assume) they are more aware of things around them than the now 4 Y/O girls were at a year old (or maybe even now). It is interesting because no one showed the older girls they should be wary but Zorra went into commando mode as soon as she woke up with 7 chicks one morning. She was on high alert any time she had them outside.

After she kicked them to the curb at 2 months they figured out I was not going to damage them and I brought TREATS! They still don't want to be handled which is fine but they are more than happy to eat scratch or Japanese Beetles from my hand.

I agree with W4W, there isn't a thing on that bird that says "EE", at least not with any characteristics we generally expect. This is somewhat problematic on its own since there is no EE breed therefore no defined characteristics, just some are very common. But if it lays a blue or green egg, it is an EE

My Leghorn went broody and I gave her 2 EE eggs to hatch. They are a week old now, One chick has the chipmunk markings the other has strange markings, it's chipmunk on the back but brown wings and splotchy face. Both chicks had the same dad but different moms, the second chick had a solid white EE mom. I've been watching their feather development to see if one is slower or faster than the other cause I've always heard pullets feather out faster??? They both are feather out the same so I either have 2 pullets or 2 cockerels if the feathering theory is true?? I'll try to get better pics today.

Cute chicks. Keep us posted. I am amazed at the broody Leghorn!
