Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

Tale feathers are pointy, color I thought was indicative of a girl, comb makes me go !
That's a pullet. I've noticed that my darker/black chicks seem to get pinkish more than lighter colored pullets. Maybe just more pigment in them?? Her comb still has a very narrow ridge up the center. A male's comb gets thicker and bumpier, kind of like 3 ridges running together. Also, it would be raspberry red. she's a keeper!

I am editing to say that I THINK, that I am PRETTY SURE, this is a pullet. Don't want to jinx you. I am that person who changes check out lines or freeway lanes and suddenly time slows to a crawl! Don't want this chicken to suddenly start crowing because I said it was a for sure pullet!

Hi again everybody!

Sorry for all the questions! The EE breed is definitely confounding my brain lately, ha!

If the tail feathers of an older Easter Egger chick 9+ weeks old are decicively rounded is that a sure indicator of pullet/hen?
No, that's not the best indicator. Comb and color (unless it's solid) are a better way to tell. They go through a lot of little molts as they mature, so tail feathers may be replaced soon. What you want to watch for are male saddle feathers which are thin, sharply pointed and shiny. My males got them around 10 weeks. A pullet will have bluntly rounded feathers in the saddle area that look like all the other body feathers.

Ha! my only doubt on her now are the pointy tail feathers. I know for "most" breeds, pointy says roo... but, the EE's being so mixed as they are, I didn't know if that was a tell on them too. I'm OK with 1 EE being a roo, I would just not prefer 2 of them :)

Pullet.

ETA: It's not unusual for pullets of any breed to have curled, pointy tail feathers when they are younger. When they get their grownup feathers around 10-12 weeks they will get a straight tail (or sickle feathers if they are a boy). Basically, before 10 weeks feather shape is no indicator of gender. :)

Well then, here are our other 2 that I'm pretty sure are girls!

Good to know! I tell you what, just when I think I have something figured out... well,
