Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

This is Liberty Belle. 12 weeks old. I'm hoping she's a she. I thought she was an Ameraucana until someone on BYC mentioned she's a EE. Any opinions?

not sure if's it's the color of my photos but her legs are more of a grey. They look green in the first pic.

Pick up her feet and look for yellow on the pads underneath. No yellow allowed for Ams.

Also, her comb looks awfully big for 12 weeks. My girls didn't look like that until closer to laying. Other than that, she looks like a pullet, but I'm no expert!

Blue is so tough to judge. I have a pullet that I thought for sure was a cockerel up until two weeks ago. Ever since she hatched, she's had a larger comb than I normally see on my EEs and she was just so big. I had her in my cockerel pen I was so sure she and another hatchmate were males. But they never got shiny hackle feathers or sickles. Then I figured out why they looked so different- they weren't the offspring of my blue EE hen and black Ameraucana cock like I'd thought. They were the accidental offspring of a Jersey Giant/Ameraucana cross! My husband had let all the chickens out into the yard at the same time and I thought I'd waited long enough for everything to "clear up." When I started looking at toe punches I put two and two together because I also had some surprise blues pop up from Wheaten Marans eggs. So now I have some monster sized EEs and two incredibly huge JG/Marans cockerels. Luckily they all have the easygoing Jersey Giant personality.

There are 2 things that make me say roo.... the comb is red and the dark blue on the hackles and wings. I don't have any blue pullets or hens with dark blue on the wings. Keep us updated.

BTW the yellow is what is making his legs look green and was the dead giveaway he is not a pure breed Ameraucana.

I agree Liberty is a cockerel. I've never seen that much comb on that young a pullet, plus it's got the three rows. The darker shading is also a sign, pullets are more even colored.

OK! These guys are almost 8 weeks now, and 28 chickens are eating me out of house and home! Time to start figuring out the pullets so they can go to their homes, and then rehoming the roos. I'm actually frightened I have 21 roos. Say it isn't so! Since I have 14 EE's I'm going to try and post a few at a time to get consensus and so that we don't get them all mixed up!

Here is the first batch:

#1 Little One - our super slow grower that almost didn't make it past the first week. The only one that is this colour, and my daughter's favourite

#2 Mabel - The absolute tamest one of the bunch. My favourite, and I'm pretty darn sure is now growing the comb and colour pattern of a roo. Which makes me sad, but I do have a home lined up if that's the case

#3 One of my new favourites. No name yet, but unique and really friendly. I think it's a pullet

#4 - Started out as a chipmunk chick. I think this is the same bird, there are 2 that are alike. I'm leaning toward pullet(s) because of the more even colour distribution

#5 And the other really unique colour pattern - Same thing, there are 2 of them that are alike. First 2 are the same bird - has a more grey head. Last ones are the same bird, more red on the head. Leaning towards roo because of the splotchy red on the wings

Just to give you an idea of the other ones I have to sex. I have 4 or 5 that are white with red lacing on the wings. I have NO idea what they are!!! All of my EE were Blue Wheaten Ameraucanas- so I'm assuming Blue Wheaten Ameraucana hen crossed with the different Wyandottes she has? You can see the white with the lacing below

I'm hoping that they all aren't roos because I already have 2 out of 4 Lavender Orp roos, 4 out of 5 Black Copper Maran roos and I have NO idea how to sex the Wyandottes!!
