Nickeechickee, roosters vary greatly in frequency of crowing. My EE boy crowed in the pitch black of pre-dawn. We have the coop positioned so you could only hear him with the windows open and even then it wasn't loud but he would not have done well as a covert boy. He was pretty quiet most of the day so I guess he just thought it was his job to wake Apollo to get that sun up.
Califarmgirl, I don't see any red coming in. I think you just have a very orange girl. The baby feather molt starts around 8-9 weeks and the thing to watch for are dark red (like dried blood) feathers popping up in the middle wing. Those would be masculine. Usually you can see some interruption in the patterning where the bars will be so I think the light one is the safer bet for pullet but both are looking girly so far.
