Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

This is the bumpy deflated balloon comb from the last batch. She was 8 weeks when this was taken. Notice the pink? That's a girly comb. I should get a closeup of her comb now -- it's tall and has peas but at the same time is stumpy in length. Very odd.

And this batch's deflated balloon at 3 or 4 weeks:

It hasn't changed in size but it's gaining a bit of color at 6.5 weeks.

Ginger and Curry's look like the bottom one. Ginger's is a bit pinker at the top but not all the way down to the beak.

Got a couple new pics of my as yet unnamed EE. I'm still unconvinced of the gender of this one. S/he is nine weeks old.

I have two EE that I got from Orschelns. They are now 4.5 weeks old. I was wondering if you think either is a roo. I have my suspicions about one of them.

Chicken one (not sure why it looks like "she" has a bluish tinge, it's more of a blackish color)

Chicken Two

Wow! The first one looks purple on my tablet! I'd love to see what she looks like when she's older. Both look like girls in my novice opinion.

There is, of course, a lot of variation in EE combs due to mixed heritage, and they aren't always a clue to the sex. Not all cockerels will have the 3 obvious rows, but have you ever seen a bird that has the obvious 3 rows not be a cockerel? Not asking to be difficult, I just always thought this was a pretty sure sign if it is present.

Oh sure, if you can see 3 obvious rows on a chick, it means the comb is already developing and it's almost assuredly male. But, that doesn't make the reverse true. Not seeing three obvious rows doesn't mean it's female -- it could be a late-bloomer or a mixed comb. And, comb width only matters if there are defined rows.

Nine weeks?! Wow, and I thought my Sussex was slow to feather. I suspect cockerel but until the wing fills in, it's a maybe.
