Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

Oooo, nine weeks and already that red in the comb... It's probably a cockerel.

Unless it's not really as red as the pic shows. You can look under the feathers along the lower back to see if any pointy saddles are sprouting. I'd keep it until you're sure.

Yes definitely keep them until you know for sure. I have a hen who I thought was likely a male. A couple of her offspring were also questionable up until 15 weeks.

This one stared getting some pink comb at 5 weeks, but the comb looked small. A friend adopted her & she ended up growing into another squirrel-chasing female.

This one came from an egg I was about to cook. My daughter begged to add it to the incubator with the other eggs we were setting. (She saw the egg size & thought she could get "twins.") I didn't think it would hatch after being in the fridge for a couple days. The comb looked wide & the x-large chick was ugly & awkward, but "Omelet" grew up into my daughter's favorite hen. Out of all the beauties, my daughter picked this one to keep.

Omelet's parents= Dad EE + Mom Mutt. Dad hatched from a pick egg & Mom lays brown eggs. I did not expect Omelet to lay olive eggs. There must have been some blue genes hidden in the mix.

@Wishing4Wings it really is that red. Lol. I think the heat may have something to do with it though because all my chicks, except one that's not quite right went red very early. A few are looking like pullets.

@Faraday40 that is such a sweet story about Omelet.

And her egg is an amazing olive colour so that worked out well. I can only hope that the one my daughter fell in love with works out half as well. I'm pretty sure I couldn't sell it.

My favourite looking at my daughter's favourite as if - what on earth happened here!

I've had some like that were everyone keeps saying ''boy'' and it turns out a beautiful pullet.

Great story about omelet! I had three dark brown eggs in the 'bater last spring, and due to their large size I thought they were dead when I candled them, and almost threw them to the dogs, when I changed my mind and decided to put them back. All three hatched, and from those eggs I got my two beautiful olive egger pullets Confection and Compassion.

I remember Omelet! Lol

@cwrite I wasnt to say it's a boy...especially with the barring on the tail.
He's very handsome!

When this chick came out of the egg, my first thought was Roo!

Now at 12 weeks old I am not sure.

The comb is wide but pretty flat with no indication of rows of peas.

It's dad is a true Wheaten Ameraucana and the mom is a blue colored EE.

No signs of pointy feathers or crow. I usually am lucky enough to hear a "crow" attempt anywhere from 4 - 8 weeks when I have a boy.
He/She was feasting on eggs.

Almost black with black lacing and no red or brown on wings, The tail gives me a little pause

What do you think?

I'm thinking pullet.

I think SHE 's a messy eater.
I've had pullets with wide flat combs before. I don't see any roo traits in the pics.
