Any idea if it's a hen or roo? Almost 5 weeks old.
Thank you

Yeah, the red is a lot more pronounced. Dragon is like that, he's darker, too, but it was obvious at 3 weeks that he was a cockerel. Oh well. I wouldn't have minded. Conan (2 years) and Dragon are the roos for a flock of 45, so one more cockerel would have been nice.
I'm going to go with cockerel on this one. Because of both the stance and because at that age, there's still no tail. Not 100% foolproof, but it's a good indicator for the first 2-3 weeks. I used the wing/tail length to pick one cockerel out of a bin at Ace Hardware to go with 7 pullets and so far, it looks like that's exactly what I got.![]()
Need better shots of their combs. Be careful about using the flash, it tends to washout the features that need to be seen. Natural but not direct lighting is best. And they need to be at least 4 weeks old, it is almost impossible to tell before that.Has anyone had a chance to look at my chicks pics from day or so ago? Looking to find out the type of hen and if they are in fact a hen and not a roo. If these are not good pics for that tell me what you need and I will get it for you. Just not sure what angles to take the pics at. Thanks a bunch
I don't see any cockerel features in the first one, and she is pretty rangy. Second one, I'm now leaning toward male since the red is increasing. Surprised the comb isn't larger. Keep us updated if things change... like crowing.
Wow - something about this picture - the stance, the look in the eye - just screams cockerel to me. I'd definitely keep an eye on this one. The other (black head) is a pullet.
Ugh, I was afraid I would get some yeses for this one....I am going to focus on the fact that she is much smaller than the other one and cross my fingers haha. I got 2 Brahmas and 2 EE from the pullet bin at IFA and one of the Brahamas is VERY suspect of being a roo and this one is leaning there. 50% roo rate is NOT satisfactory.Wow - something about this picture - the stance, the look in the eye - just screams cockerel to me.
