Anyone care to help- the only other black and white EE I had turned out to be a roo. Add the red patches in the wings and I'm a bit paranoid -- the red is minimal and comb isn't pink. Can anyone give me a peace of mind?
Well, you did pretty good then. It's tricky at 4 weeks, and lots of cockerels haven't started developing at all by then.@Wishing4Wings Thank you!!
I really wanted EEs so i was keeping my eye on local papers & the CList ... a guy about 45minutes away(from Saratoga Springs, NY) had them advertised on the CList at 3-4 weeks old. We went to look and did our best to pick what we thought were pullets, hoping for no more then 2 roosters(Magnum & Hawkeye), although it's sounding like we may have a third roo(#1) based on feedback here. If that proves to be true we may be looking to trade #1 for a hen or a meat bird....
The comb is a little washed out in the bright light, but the fact that I can't see it well goes with a pullet prediction. This bird would have dark red on the wings if it was a cockerel.
Slikies themselves are hard to sex. Some people can tell by the size and shape of the crest, but I don't have the knack, and it may not hold true since they are crosses. You may want to try on a Silkie thread to see if there are any sexing tips. 4 weeks is too young to be sure. Watch the patterned (cuckoo) one for solid white areas coming in on the wings. In crosses, that usually shows up in the males. If the pattern is true cuckoo (or barring), males will not get the white patches. If the pattern stays like it is now, I'd be more inclined to think it's a pullet. The white one... we could flip a coin.
How old is the bird? Just looking at the color pattern, I suspect a cockerel, but the age matters.
Mixed with Light Brahma it seems, way cute. A close up of the comb would be helpful, are there 3 distinct rows on the comb? There is not much color there and the legs don't look overly thick.Hi I just now joined this site in hopes that someone could tell me the gender of this chicken. This is my first time raising chickens and I bought sexed Easter Eggers from the local feed store. I have a feeling based on what I've read that this one may be a rooster.
( he/hopefully she is about 7 1/2 weeks old)
(this last one is from about a week ago)
I live with lots of neighbors so keeping a rooster isn't an option, but this one is incredibly friendly and seeks attention from me so culling him is going to break my heart :<
