My guess is a girl because both of my EE roo's have been crowing for a while now and both have red combs and male feathering. My boys were hatching in Feb.

that is fantastic. Thank you I am going to give it a shot. This sounds like the way to go. Thank you so much your writing gave me a wonderful pic of what your hens and chicks must look like, it sounds like they have a great life also. Thanks again

A picture of how "difficult" it is to raise chicks when you have a broody hen.

I had to "biggify" the picture to see 1 of the 2 darker EEs just to the right of Zorra, the other must be in there SOMEWHERE. The "white" one on the left of the trio is an EE. She goes more tan-ish/red-ish/buff-ish daily. Kind of like the color is bleeding through her feathers from her head toward her tail:

And as noted, you need a SERIOUS broody, one that will stay on the nest on eggs, or nothing at all day after day after day after day ... One that sits in the nest a lot but willingly leaves or stays out if ejected might not be a good prospect. Clemence was in the broody buster as soon as Zorra accepted the chicks. She had been broody for at least a week as well so I didn't stick her in the buster JUST IN CASE I needed a backup plan. I guess she got what she wanted, she broke from being broody but gets to mother chicks anyway.

Here's a pic of my 17 week old EE, Wilma.

I'm hoping she's a pullet, she's my favorite of the big girls!

At 17 weeks she is unquestionably a girl. Why did you name her after my mother?

I lurked around outside for 45mins in 90 degree heat and got a few more. The chickens mostly wanted to hang out in the shade, maybe i'll have more luck this evening when it's not so hot!
Black guys comb from the top.
Leaning toward pullet on this one.

Dark grey muffs up close from the front (he got pretty friendly over the oats)
Cockerel.
And same guys comb:

This is as good as I could get of the white one, not co-operative at all!

Comb is still very pale, leaning toward pullet.

Dark grey muffs with the one I think is a girl, except someone said s/he has white patches on the wings, so maybe not?

Yes, looks like this ones a pullet.

Knowing my luck I'll end up with one hen again, lol! At least we'll have meat for the freezer!
I would wait a little while before processing them so you know for sure. Isn't 7 weeks a bit young to process?

Yay!!! She's named after my beloved grandma Wilma who died when I was 12.

Thanks Milliefleur! I'll update you all with pictures in a couple of weeks, I just needed to give the processing lady a number (I said five, but I guess we'll see), won't be done until middle of September when they're about 17 weeks, gotta get 'em done before the crowing starts this time, but hopefully they'll still be a good size & we're not really up for doing it ourselves.
