Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

This is a great thread. I think I have one of each, might I be right? They are 6 weeks old.

Cookie is darker with the pink comb and Cocoa is more uniform in color and I can’t see much comb at all. I’m on the lookout for the red to come in on the wings, about what age does that happen?

Hello! I wanted to share a post regarding telltale signs you have an Easter Egger cockerel.

This was only my experience, and I hope it helps somebody identify whether they have girls or boys. Basically this is not a for sure guide, just hopefully a helpful post.

I was able to tell my cockerel at around 4-6 weeks old, and here are a few pictures to help.

(Sulo's tail feathers are narrow and upright.)

This is Munk an Easter Egger pullet to compare. Same age, but the feathering in is very different. Sulo's "big boy" feathers came in later then Munk's "big girl" feathers.

Sulo and Munk. (same breed/age just to see the difference)

Hope this helps someone! Easter Eggers are hard to sex, and this may not be every case, but it certainly was here and I hope these differences help people tell who is who

Its hard to see and learn. Photobucket put a nice banner across every picture. Sorry!

I'd go Coco pretty much for sure is a pullet. I got two that look almost just like her from Meyer last June. Not sure about Cookie, comb looks pinkish but doesn't look to be 3 row. Coloring not uniform. I could go either way at the moment.

Well done with the pictures.

Oh thank you so much for the input! I hadn’t come across any that looked like her yet! This is our first flock of 8 chicks. We got 4 straight run and I’ve got my fingers crossed we only have one cockerel. I was trying to take weekly photos of them individually and boy it’s getting pretty hard now!

Won't stand still? ;)

Hmm, straight run would suggest half boys if they just grab them out of the bin and don't check. Hopefully you get just the one. Sadly for the males of the egg layer chicken breeds, they are substantially less desirable. EEs kind of extra in that regard. They look big enough when feathered out but at least with the ones I've had, not a lot of weight for the pot. Good luck!

I bought 4 straight run “Americanas” at TSC 5 weeks ago. I think they are all Roos. What do y’all think

Total newbie suckered by the cute lol! They had EE, Asian blacks, and white leghorns in the bin. We got two EE and one each of the others. Hours of thread digging and I’m thinking Cookie is our only one. We will definitely wait as long as possible though, we don’t have restrictions but are just hesitant to have a cockerel in our first go round at this now that we know more. Here’s hoping!
