Easter egger tongue in throat.

We have looked, cannot see anything in there. She actually pushed the skin out and scoops some food into the top beak. We are slowly trying to decrease the beak but if she doesn’t get the use of her tongue back I don’t know if she will make it. I have been very upset. She was fine and then we noticed this.

So sorry about your chick. I really wish there was an easy fail proof solution to this problem, but that I know of there isn’t. I believe the OPs chick was put down because it wasn’t gaining weight due to this deformity. You might find the link in my first reply helpful, it’s another chick that had this problem that the owner got it an experimental surgery to try to correct it. Supposedly it did survive after the surgery but that owner never posted an update after that.

I wish there was some kind of research or something into this problem because it seems to be relatively common. Do you have access to a vet?

Yes, I actually work for a vet. Although, I'm not sure they would do that kind of surgery on this chick. There really isn't much info out there when I try to look up this issue. This chick is smaller than the others because I'm sure it's not able to take in as much feed as the others but it also a bantam so hard to compare it to the other chick I have it with.

I’m so sorry to hear about her. It’s a lot to put a chick through that kind of invasive surgery…Do you think you could apply some wrap or tape under the pocket and push it up for her to not get food and such stuck in it? Ultimate I think if you were to tube feed her and keep the pocket in her lower beak clear of food, you could sustain her as a special needs chick. I don’t know how the lower beak not growing would affect her quality of life later.
