It's almost time for my hens to start laying. Can I put colored plastic eggs in the nest or should I put wood eggs?

I use golf balls. Some people use ceramic or wooden eggs. You can use colored plastic Easter eggs but there are a couple of issues with them. When settling in the nest to lay, a hen usually does some scratching. The plastic eggs are so light they can easily get scratched out of the nest. You can fill the eggs with sand, gravel, or something else heavy to handle that, but with their scratching the egg can come apart. So you need to tape or glue it shut. I tried that but eventually the scratched mine apart, that's when I switched to golf balls.

I like golf balls too because 1) they're obviously not eggs (to us), so you won't accidentally try to boil one for lunch! 2) they're durable and can take being kicked around very well.
