Problem: I was giving my chickens grit and calcium in small pan feeders. They would tip over the pans and/or scratch the grit/calcium out in only one day. Although grit and calcium are not too expensive, most of what I put out to feed my chickens was being dumped into the deep litter never to be eaten.
Solution: Small PVC feeder made out of 2 inch Wye Sockets and pipe. I made two feeders and mounted them side by side.
Benefits: Very little waste with these feeders. After 1 week in the coop, I can visually see the grit and calcium in the feeder tube going down, but very, very slowly as you would expect if the birds were only eating what they needed and not scratching out the rest. At this rate, I will only have to refill these grit/calcium feeders less than once per month. I paid about $6 for the 2 Wye Sockets and pipe. Very easy to make. Mounted everything on scrap wood. Good investment in my book.
Here is the YouTube video where I got the idea.
