Easy Keeping Chickens

I live in Oklahoma where the weather can get really hot in the summer (sometimes in the 100) and really cold (single digits with wind, freezing rain/sleet) in the winter. I want a breed of chicken that can handle this kind of weather.

The breeds that I am interested in are the Cinnamon Queen, Buff Orpington, Rhode Island Red...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome! I would personally go for buff Orpingtons or Brahmas, as they can stand hot summers (with proper ventilation and maybe a fan) and cold winters (with enough bedding and wind protection). The buff Orpingtons should not be kept in a mixed flock as other birds will pick on them due to their placid, sweet nature. Good luck!

I really like the Buff Orpingtons. I am only thinking of starting out with 4 hens. I don't want to get in over my head since I am new to chicken keeping.

I haven't done any research on the Brahmas... I will look them up.

I would also look at Bielefelder. They are very good layers with excellent temperaments. I keep my Bielefelders with my Orps and they get along fine.

I would personally go with Buff Orpingtons if that is the breed you are interested in. They have better resistance to the colder and hotter weather conditions.
P.S. Mine always tend to be top of the pecking order.

So true, our buff was so sweet the others starved him out.

Orphingtons don’t handle the heat well. Red Sex Links do well (Cinnamon Queen) Rhode Island Red do well. I have extreme temperatures too. 112/0. Heat kills...most chickens (full size breeds) can tolerate cold temperatures especially with shelter from drafts and wicked winds. I’d focus on breeds that can tolerate your heat in summer. Leghorns do well. Best wishes

I have a Buff Orpington, an ISABrown, and 2 SLW. No one is picking on my BO. The ISAB is the top of the pecking order. I thought the SLW would as they are larger than the ISA. They will peck one another but rarely. They were brought up together. The other night when I put my babies to bed. The BO was between the 2 SLW all three snuggled up. Looked so cute Black, Orange, Black. My ISAB looked lonely in a nest box. Her own fault for being mean. I was surprised that my ISAB made herself top hen. She's the smallest but quick. Gets in a peck and moves on. I haven't been able to break her yet.
