eating charcoal

I have been noticing a lot of black poo. I hope it is from the ash I dumped out there.

Yes if they are eating charcoal the poo turns black. Black poo can also be "old blood" from the intestines but if your girls are healthy then it should be from the charcoal.

For years and years, before "chicken", we used to dump our wood ashes in the garden where now the chickens reside. So of course once the chickens discovered the charcoal treasures, they have never quit! It has been about 2 years and the chickens consume it every day. I have always worried about the charcoal absorbing some nutients in their systems, which it just maybe doing. But nobody has gotten sick or died from it. Just TONS of black poop! LOL

So glad that the poo is black from charcoal. Now to find out who the egg eater is.

Thank you both for the good information. It's so weird how animals will know what is good or not, wish humans had that capability, maybe we do but don't listen to our inner selves...?
I'll have to gather charcoal and ashes for all my birds.

But then chickens loving styrofoam just wigs me out! wonder what's up with that!!

Thats funny,my ducks go nuts over styrofoam....
