Eating chicken

I still enjoy eating chicken. I don't have any problem with eating our rabbits, either, so I don't think I will have problems eating our extra roosters when the time comes. Of course, we got our critters specifically to raise our own food, so the mindset is there for it.

Oddly enough, I can no longer eat chocolate that looks like chicks, though.

How do people eat those marshmallow easter peeps?

Actually I only eat chicken I raise. (except wings which I have to buy because chickens only have 2 each)

Besides raising freedom rangers and cornish rocks for meat, I always get straight run chicks and eat the boys. At least they get to live a good free ranging chicken life for a while rather than become animal feed as dayolds.

It's not always pleasant but I remind myself why I started raising chickens in the first place; to provide healthy food for my family and the source of that food are animals raised humanely.
The same can't be said of the neat styrofoam wrapped morsels at the grocer.

Reading these posts I thought 'the food industry has us right where they want us'.

I have just found it harder to prepare chicken... especially whole chickens for roasting. Now when I pick up my own chicks I can feel the breast bone and I know exactly what that is like on the roasted chicken and it just seems wrong... ick!

Yes, it is the breast bone that has done it for me, too! Oh well - more fish is good for us!

I still love to eat chicken but I am less interested in eating my chickens? I justify it that the grocery store chickens I don't know personally....if that makes any sense at all? Although, every freaking time my Brother in Law comes to visit he goes on and on about his friend who killed one of his chickens and they cooked it up for dinner that night and how tasty it was...I told him that since I do all the raising of the chicks and cleaning of the coops, I will not be offering to cook up any of my babies and he can raise his own meat birds mine all all for egg laying. Actually, I could eat my chickens if someone else did the harvesting of them. I know they were raised well and I make it a point not to name them and after all I do believe that chickens are food not friends. I would have a harder time say harvesting my buff orp or my jersey girl but the rest of them I could eat.

This is the same brother in law who suggested having a roo might lead to unwanted chicks - lol - as if I could not control the birth of unwanted chickens. I told him so long as we keep collecting and eating the eggs - chickens are not like cats and their will not be any unwanted chicks surprising us....now if only those darn neighbor cats would stop having kittens under my house.

E my birds! The eggs and the loving friendship. But to me, they are infact...............chickens.

I actually have a worse time thinking of eating chicken (or eggs) from the grocery store or a restaurant, because I know those birds generally lead miserable lives. I would prefer to eat a chicken that had a happy, healthy life for the time it was on this Earth. I suppose logically it doesn't matter to the chicken once it's dead, but it matters to me that it had some quality of life.
I think that people that have never been around the animals that they eat loose a connection to the food-- it comes neatly packaged at the store-- and that is a tragedy, because it means we/they take it for granted. My MIL once told me that she doesn't even consider chickens worthy of being called an animal... that they just grow them out from chicks and harvest as if a vegetable. This is sad, because it was an animal, and alive. There is nothing at all wrong with enjoying eating chicken, but I think it's irresponsible to deny that it was ever a living animal.
That's my little rant! I'm done now, I promise.
