Thank you for the pictures!Everyone was still inside the coop and kicking the shavings around but here are some pictures that are more level with the front of the box. The piece of wood that covers the eggs is just a 1x3 and I actually need to replace it. It was reclaimed wood from the nest box itself but it’s not wide enough to stop some of the more stealthy hens from popping them out. I also need to cap off my ends. I have some egg hungry hens too. I have plenty of oyster shell available. I tried something I saw from a BYC member that involved mustard and tobasco sauce. I have 2 nest boxes and put one of these in rash box. The next morning I went out and they had eaten everything down to the last molecule. There are some DIY options on here and online. I‘m not sure if building or buying would be the cheaper way to go for you but i was able to convert my current nest box into a rollaway. Mine was six boxes mounted to the wall of the coop. I took the boxes down and mounted stilts on the front. Then screwed the back to the coop wall. I added a box to the front of the nest boxes to catch the eggs and it actually worked out.
I did post some pictures on this thread but i can try and get better ones tomorrow morning. What kind of nest boxes do you currently have? I can write up a more in depth post with pictures once i take them if you like. I can also include a drawing and my thought process if you like.I have some egg hungry hens too. So I think I’ll need more info to build a roll away egg thing. What does it look like and how can I build one? Do you have pictures?
I only have 4 girls in the coop and 2 nest boxes so it won’t be a big project but this behavior has to stop.
I am working on a solution. My coop has an attached exterior nest box. I’ve begun to make a sloped floor in the nest box that will allow the eggs to roll and drop to a lower padded shelf. I’ll also put up a visual screen of feed bag strips that will help with the illusion of egg disappearance but won’t stop the egg from rolling to its final lower shelf destination.I did post some pictures on this thread but i can try and get better ones tomorrow morning. Well I just finished my home made solution. As you can see it’s not perfect but I’m not going to cull the hens. They’re just being hens so I’m trying to outsmart them.I did post some pictures on this thread but i can try and get better ones tomorrow morning. What kind of nest boxes do you currently have?
