Eating raw mince

In the discussion you posted today it says not to feed chickens raw meat Why is that? Just asking because I feed mine raw mince regularly.

They can have raw meat as long as its not spoiled.

I feed mine raw fish relatively frequently and will also put out roadkill deer carcasses for dogs and chickens. The latter approach is used only during the cooler months. The chickens do not seem to have any health issues associated with the activity.

I eat raw burger meat and have occasionally taken a slice or two from a steak before it hits the grill. I've done it all my life and the next major stop on the birthday train for me is 60. My dogs eat raw chicken parts and raw venison trimmings. My chickens get mice from the traps (snap traps and live bucket traps). The live mice go into a plastic kiddie pool and the chickens get VERY excited when they see me walking towards it with a bucket in my hands. Total mice caught in the outbuildings is around 40-50 a week, mostly in the bucket traps.

I'd bet a little minced meat wouldn't harm your chickens.

Way back when (like a century ago) feeding raw meat scraps was part of the recommended diet.

Looks like the article was written by a member in 2021. I don't believe the member articles are vetted for accuracy and can contain incorrect information. I did read thru some of the article comments and there are several people pointing out different things that may/may not be correct.

If they come upon a dead animal (maybe a fellow chicken that was killed by a hawk), they'll eat that. Raw would be fine unless it's gone bad, in which case you wouldn't feed it to them anyway, would you? I routinely toss out bones for them to pick over when I'm butchering, no reason not to.

I don't believe the member articles are vetted for accuracy and can contain incorrect information. There's no way they can check every post for accuracy, it would take forever. I like to think I'm not a moron, even tho sometimes I am ignorant because I just haven't learned it yet. Common sense goes a long way. Would you eat it? No? Then don't feed it to your animals. And, yes, I would not eat vomit but my dog does. I just take everything with a grain of salt, try to puzzle it out and, if it still makes no sense to me, I leave it alone. I think most of us on this forum love animals and want to do the right/best thing for them. That's the key--if it sounds fishy, no harm done in not doing it.
