Eating woodshavings?!

and kid's play sand is soft, rounded, unlike sharp sand, so is quite ineffective in the gizzard - but fine for dust baths. If you have any bonfire ash, you can add it to the sand in the dust bath as a traditional/natural treatment for mites etc.. Mine pick at woodshavings too, BTW, so I'd add to the chorus of 'don't worry about it'

Yep mine have been seen picking it too! It is nerverwracking when you first get them. My darlings decided they love my rhubarb leaves which of course are supposedly poisonous but they spent the whole summer eating it with no poor effects!
