Do you refrain from eating chickens you have named? I have all mine named because I find it easier than keeping track of who has what number or saying that one red one over there... etc. DH likes that they have names, but we both realize that many if not all will eventually end up in the freezer. I don't find myself particularly attached to any one chicken, and I will likely replace them with their offspring next year... non-immediate family seems to think one cannot eat a bird that has been named...? I am curious to know other chicken peoples opinions.

prepare your mind for slaughtering, name or no name; then it should be easier.
When I was little and my grandpa had cows that had calfed, all the little browns ones were named Rhoda (brown hair), all the little red ones were named Tracy (sister0 and the very dark ones were named Toby (brother). Well we ate a lot of Rhoda, Tracy and Tobys.
I name some of my chickens. My RIR roos are named Marciana and Balboa. I am pretty sure I would have no problem eating them. Now when you are not used to slaughtering, it can be a little tramatic, but if you are prepared to toughen yourself up and get the job done, it can be done.
I was thinking that I would name some of my chickens Gumbo, Friquesee', Routee, Etoufee', etc, just to be cute, but the kids came up with other names.
You know, I noticed about the relatives saying 'couldn't' and I have a funny little thing about myself when someone assumes negative things about me. Like when I was 15 and took American History with a bunch of 18 year olds that needed it to graduate and they said I would have a harder time passing than them.......Thankyou. That gave me everything I needed to make 110 on every test. Or when my grandmother said I wouldn't keep my nursing assistant job for long......Thankyou. I am now a nurse.
I guess I am just putting myself in your shoes. I am trying to say I would prove them wrong.

Thank you for your encouragement I found it quite helpful. Also I thought the names were funny. My names are Wally, Bossy, Oppie, Honey (because of her color), and Sweetie ( Whom I will likely keep just for a pet).
