Hi Friends! We're awaiting our first chicks by mail and are getting our brooder all set up. We ordered an Ecoglow 20 and are wondering if we still need a thermometer, or if the chicks can self-regulate by going under/coming out etc? Thanks for any advice!

I use the EcoGlow, and don't use a thermometer with it. The chicks will go beneath it when they're cold, and come out when they are feeling warm enough. To give the chicks a greater ability to regulate their temperature, you can raise one side of the EcoGlow (it has three levels-- put one side of flat part in the second level, and keep the other side at the first level closest to the ground). This way, the chicks can go beneath the higher part of the brooder when they're warm, and get closer to the heat when they're cold by going to the lower end.

I also use a Ecoglow and do not use a thermometer the chicks know what they need. I have raise many clutches with the Ecoglow and have great results.
Good luck with your chicks your going to love the Ecoglow I find it to much more natural for the chicks. I also turn the lights off at night when I go to bed and back on it the morning so when you transition them out of the brooder no screaming chicks because they are already use to night time :)
