Edible enrichment

Men.....

I have actually shockingly few in my 'lawn' although they get plenty of opportunity to seed...

The problem is that most of what I've got in my lawn here in the Sandhills is the False Dandelion.

The chickens enjoy it, and it *is* edible for humans. But it's much inferior to real dandelions in flavor and texture.

I pull those out and feed them to the chickens while carefully nurturing the real ones.

I’m planning our weekly grocery shop and am looking for ideas on produce that will keep my girls busy. They love cabbage and corn cobs, a bit meh about broccoli. Would love some suggestions!

They already get scratch and grubs too
Try collard greens, mine get apples, watermelon, pumpkins, turnip greens and grass clippings. I don't use any chemicals on my yard and I use an electric mower with a grass catcher to get grass for the chickens. I hope this helps.

My ladies love the corn on a skewer treat. I break the corn cob in half, and stick the sharp end of the wooden skewer into the corn, and the flat end into the dirt. It bounces around like a tether ball as they peck at it. It's delicious, and entertaining. (Need to put it in fairly deep. Also, hurry up because once they know this game, they come running and start pecking before you even get it into the ground.)

I would recommend tomatoes but I‘m not sure you are supposed to give chickens nightshades (tomatoes, peppers, potatoes). Our hens love anything with seeds (melon seeds, tomato seeds, bird seed). Rice also, I scatter it around and they will dig up their bedding to find every grain!

Our chickens get all the tomato trimmings from prepping them for our table and all the catfaced and bird-pecked tomatoes that aren't fit for us.
