EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Hona/cochins. I've hatched 4 of them, 2 pullets and 2 cockerels. Both pullets have turned out with dark combs, dark eyes, and uniform blue with darker collars. Both cockerels have turned out with red combs, golden/light eyes, and this mottled/barred pattern. Svart hona roo over splash cochin hen.

Is this a sex-linked trait or a weird coincidence? ? How many would I need to hatch before I could decide?

here's the question of the day! what website would be best for building a 3-D model of a chicken coop? I've tried Sketch-Up but you have to be on a waiting list AND you have to pay for it... any suggestions? I'll be a basketball practice until 5:30 so I'll check back later to see if any of you answered. thanks in advance!

You said they were smaller than the pekin? My guess would be welsh harlequin or something along those lines.

That was my guess.

I give light all year long! From 18:00-23:00 every day, I use LED lump so for 5 W I get the equivalent of 60W I have 7 layer and I get standard of 6 eggs /day even now!

You don't give them rest? That surprises me.

No I don't! They reduce their production while molting.
In my opinion there is nothing natural in them, a bird that lay 280-330 eggs/year is an extraordinary laying machine! All made by human selection. The red jungle fowl wich is the major ancestor of chickens lay 2-3 clutch of 10-15 eggs each, so we are talking about 30-45 eggs annually most of chickens breeds lay MUCH MUCH MORE! only Asils, that are the closest to the RJF and some
other breed lay about 30-40 eggs annually. So were is the rest?
Did you know that 100 years ago, befor the comercial feed, and when people grow chicken onl on table scraps the avarege layer laid 100-150eggs annually? So in my opinion give them the best food and conditions and let them lay.
