EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Wish I could ship you some of ours, Phil.

Times 100. I have pictures of some bigger ones in my yard I just can't find them. Most of the time they are small but every once in a while a big one comes through. Once three does each with twins came through. Their size is relative to the eats around here I'm sure. They really love the spent grain and if I leave a bucket open they will munch it down

I'm dealing with Pox right now, too. My poor turkey's came down with it. Other birds have shown more mild signs of it, too. But all are acting normal, besides the pox marks.

Apparently, misquitos are notorious in this area for spreading fowl pox.

The good news is, that it's about a 2 week thing, then your flock should be immune to it.... at least according to the research I did. Infection and secondary infections being the biggest issue when they are getting over it.
Yeah, most of it is pretty mild here, and the worst hit group is still all dry, and healing. I also looked it up (my first time seeing this), and was relieved at the immunity thing. I got bitten by several mosquitos today - they are horrible. (May I ask where you are in Texas - north/south/east/west? I'm in the San Antonio area...)

Quote: Yup, that was my attitude exactly this AM. We had a quiz first thing and several of the students wanted to challenge the answers. This morning I told my module co-director "You'd better handle this, I'm too grumpy to be reasonable about this this morning..."

Obviously not a trailcam image. I'm surprised he let you that close. Probably been there before.
He didn't really have a say in how close I got, he was dead at that point.

My laptop's been slower than the 2nd coming for the last couple of days.
I'm also getting a lot of "You've already submitted.." messages when I haven't.

Anyone else?
Yup, yesterday and today. I have to refresh the page, and then the post is there... Computer is relatively new, I think it's the site.

Me too.

You know, I've never been even remotely tempted to raise turkeys on my limited property. Until now.

CURSE YOU, POULTRY MATH!!!!!!!

(So, what do I need to know to raise turkeys again?

I don't intentionally cuddle with any of them, but I do find it much easier to tend wounds and care for them if they are not skittish, so for that reason I appreciate it as a characteristic among my different birds. The Cream Legbars are hysterical, they are the very first to come up to me by the side of their fence (they are not trained to think I am treat lady, it's not really about that), and they are curious and want to be near me whenever I'm around - they just have to stay EXACTLY 1 cm out of reach. Cats, I tell you, they're just cats that lay blue eggs...

And, the main reason I wanted to get ahold of my roo, was to get a better look at his comb. I wanted to comfirm the diagnoses of avian pox/fowl pox... I've seen signs of it on my other rooster and on random birds.... All 3 of my flocks outside have it/had it.... so I just have to wait for them to get better. Haven't lost a bird to it yet, but they've all showed various signs of exposure. I just wanted to get a better look at his comb/feet.
Yup = same boat, must be going around in Texas this year. Everyone's ok, and the one whose eye was swollen shut now has it open and blinking (I used some antibiotic ointment). Yucky.

Quote: I really want to try these - alas, I have too many irons in the fire to start up yet another family group. One day, one day, I will get eggs from you.

How are your boys on noise? I have eight cockerels and roosters right now, and they aren't TERRIBLE, but they do ALL crow now. Fortunately mostly just mornings - no compulsive crowers or night time crowers (then again, night time crower = dinner here).

Quote: The info I have says to expect apples in June/July, so that sounds right. It's originally from Israel and needs low chill hours and does well with heat. Ein Shemer (which is what I have it paired with) also provides fruit around that same time (also low chill, also originally from Israel).

Tank still hasn't adapted to bedtime yet - or rather, the girls don't like him to sidle up next to them yet (they are still adapting). So Tank got some lap time and cuddles while the girls settled themselves on the roost and worked out a few pecking order issues of their own. Once it was dark, I put him back, and he wanted to snuggle with someone (like his previous girls), but they weren't interested, so he finally just cuddled up with the one who was "roosting" in the sand. Looks like he'll get bedtime cuddles for a little while until this settles down. (They have an automatic door, and if he doesn't leave them alone when going to roost, they'll try to sleep outside, which is NOT ok.) I keep reminding myself that it's only been two days.

Making chicken soup in a pressure cooker right now - smells AMAZING. I put in two small skinned CL pullets from the freezer (from the ordeal when I culled them all for potential ALV), plus water, onions, carrots, and ginger. Also harvested some of the out of control lemongrass in my garden and put it in there, too, it's going to be delicious!!!

I seen a doe with triplets this year.... Pretty unusual.
How are you Penns?

sharing again

PVC I found fairly expensive... I seen this on here and I know from resent searching Lowes online their galvanized duct pipe about two foot long is only $3.50

Trying to make space saving feeders

Why wouldn't regular stove pipe work?

Doing well. Triplets I haven't seen yet. Roasting coffee as we type. Smells delicious out here. Course that could be the Abbey beer I'm having while waiting on the roaster. And the full moon is coming up as well. Couldn't be better.

Quote: I've tried half a dozen different "attractants" over the years, even scent strips soaked in estrus urine; haven't had a buck respond to any of them yet. I did toss what was left of some green stuff on the ground the other day, though, and it was gone in two days...coming in at night.
