nice ! thank you, have you had personal experience with dexter as well as angus?  Glad to see the dexter with horns, need horns on an ox to keep the head in the yoke on a downhill.

My experience is mostly with Angus and some Herefords. My nephew who raises Dexters has a farm near Carthage but I haven't been there.
I mentioned Dexters to my brother several years back and he told me his adopted son has them but that's all I know. I want to try to get down there to visit him and see the cattle too. Maybe if I get there before I butcher all these extra cockerels I can take one to Daxigait.

makes you wonder why they didn't choose something line the eagle instead? Maybe cause it was easier to catch a larger ground bird? :gig

Plus eagles aren't Kosher.

here is the Niles Valley page that discusses the problem gene of the Milking Shorthorn:

Araucana here a post that l wrote today in the Araucana thread on this subject!
The lethal gene in araucana kills 100% of the homozygots and almost 20% of the heterozygote this dominant Autosomal gene causes some severe abnormalities in the embryonic development of the head, it couses an incomplete fusion between the hyoid and the mandibular bons, cause a dysfunctional skull and death.

Funny how we like to breed things with health problems. :(

Almost all pure breed making, needs alot of brothers and sisters mating, fact that diminish the gene pool of the breed, causing alot of problems! In fact there is a therm that describes the vitality of mix breed it called Heterosis.
See the Persian cat, naked cat, gefman Shepherd dog spine, pekinez dogs breathing problems ect.

Yea we still do presents but they know where everything came from and who bought it. They don't get a ton of things because they don't need a ton of things. If they got a lot of things then stuff would most likely never get played with. Typically we try to get them to give away some of there older toys before the holidays because they will be getting new toys. Helps to cut down on the amount of stuff they have, also helps them to spread the joy of giving away something.
Good plan.

My inlaws, as much as I like them, have an insane process for Christmas gifts.
They first decided to trade names so everybody only needed to buy one gift. I thought that was a good idea but the process went downhill from there.
They then limited the gift price to $10 which was eventually raised to $20.
Such structure doesn't sit well with me. What if you found a wonderful gift that the person would love for $40? Or you made a wonderful gift that didn't cost anything?
At Thanksgiving dinner, we would write down our names on a piece of paper - but then - wait for it. We would write down 3 things we wanted.
It gets worse.
Then we would put the pieces of paper in a hat and draw them out - kind of a secret Santa thing.
It gets worse again.
My sister-in-law couldn't leave until she knew who's name everyone had. She'd first start by making her daughters tell who's name they had.
So the end result was that you knew who was buying you a present, what it was and how much it cost.

I have to preface the following by stating that I don't hide my feelings from my in-laws very well and if they hate me for what I say, I don't really care. Especially if their traditions are stupid.

It got to be too much for me so before we traded names one year, I suggested that rather than buying from the list, we learn something about the other person and select a creative gift appropriate for the family member, rather than a package of socks or underwear.
I then drew the ire of the group by suggesting it would be easier if when we sat down to dinner, we just reach into our pocket, withdraw a $20 bill and pass it to the person ont the left.
They didn't get the irony.

I once got my SIL's name and because of her need to know who had who's name, I had a plan for her. I bought her a nice present but before I gave it to her, I gave her a gift that was a lump of coal. I felt bad when she started crying.

Good info. I'll have to look into it more. If not to raise them again, but to relay the info to my classes.
