EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

I swear at my eggs in the hatcher. I try to act like a Drill Sargent and teach them tough love......

But they may decide not to ever hatch!!!!!!

Because I was informed I love to disagree I am going to "semi_Agree' I sell show quality birds , however, I think 10% is a high number of those that hatch being show birds. I think it is closer to 5%.

I wish I could get more for my chicks, People do not pay much for chicks around here. When a parent brings a kid to get chicks, and picks 2 or 3 birds the chances of them getting a show bird are pretty small.

I raise a ton of birds to pick my showbirds from, the rest become layers or breeders or fryers.. Its a fact of life.

I have found that the showbirds are not always the best breeders. Depending on what I am trying to breed in or out of the line. The system is kind of rigged against must 4h kids. They need the birds as chicks but few of them have room to raise 30-40 chicks to pick the winners.

Also Production/hatchery quality birds lay more eggs and are more fertile show quality birds many times. I had a judge that raises Speckled Sussex asking about my birds at the last show. He did not show at that show, he was telling me he had to add in hatchery stock to his to get fertility up.

Any bird can be pet quality. I have a ton of them! Anyways I think you are just a tad tough on "breeders" when they are not the whole fault. If the kids could get the birds at 6 weeks there would be a better chance of a show bird. BUT then the lose the other parts of bird raising.. Oh well, it is what it is..
I think 10% is a fair estimate for "breeder or show quality" as I agree with you that every bird that is show is not a breeder and the opposite. My biggest problem is with breeders advertising "show quality" birds and misrepresenting the birds that the picture and the eggs from pens you actually get. If they are from good bloodline, there s always a chance you can get a "unicorn". But for what some people are charging for 'show quality" eggs without proper representation of what they are selling or education to youths and their parents, kids show up with what they think are "winners" to shows and end up with DQ's that their parents paid $65 for because some breeders are getting rid of their culls that way-free show bird for just the cost of shipping... $65 is a lot of money to a lot of 4 H family with kids excited to get a good start. I am newer and have a lot to learn. But some stuff I have seen and heard at shows just makes me sick. it was nothing personal against breeders-just shady ones who misrepresent themselves and what they are selling...

Immmmm.... I sort of cluck at them like a mother hen.

Yes, I probably need an intervention.

It's only day 18, but I keep walking by looking for pips. So patient for so long, and now I just can't stand the wait!!!!!

When I candled before moving them to the hatcher tonight, I looked for movement but did not see any. A pip at 18 days could be expecting just a tad much. I even tried to convince myself the quitters had a chance yet...BUT my brain overruled and they went into the feed them back pile.. I feed them to the butcher roosters (boiled and cracked)
