Next time out to birds I'll take a picture of what I thought would be a great way of giving the hens a pasture to graze. At the rate they go through it I'll need 12 pens just like it. They have been in it for a little over three weeks and it's flat mostly eaten grass that was 30 inches tall. I forgot the measurements but I think it's 30 feet wide and 80 feet long. Who needs goats!!!!!


It's all about the stocking density and what forage is available. I find that some grasses like turf type fescue are among chickens' least favorite forage. If I leave them in a paddock till its mostly wiped out, the only thing that remains is grass.
I buy seeds in bulk from Hummert's for reseeding. Alfalfa, clover, ladino, beets, radish, 7-top turnip, flax, and in summer - buckwheat, for winter - Austrian or some other pea.
If you can get the alfalfa well established, it will come back.

My first thought when I saw it was a mud turtle.
