EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Anyone here make maple syrup from your own trees? We're attempting it this year. A guy at our church took us out to his camp this morning to show us how they make it. Definitely really neat! We came home and tapped 6 of our maples to try it. I swear we already have two gallons and we just did it maybe two hours ago. I thought it would drip slower than that!
i dont currently but have in the past, you will need a lot of sap!

Have fun! sap right out of the tree is yummy too!

If I remember right the ratio is 15 liter of sap to 1 liter of syrup!
I can make lemon juice, don't think that maple tree will grow good in ouer weather! :lau

If we get just enough for breakfast one morning, we'll be happy lol. I'm very curious to see how much we actually end up with. Next year, now that we have an idea of what to do, We'll probably do a lot more of the maples.

Everyone already figured out how sweet the sap is lol. The kids were sucking on the ends of the hoses lol

From what I understand, it's something like 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup

LOL, i think when we did it, it took 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of dark amber syrup

Welcome to the thread!

Bill is enabling my addiction.... He came home from the feed store and said "Hey love, they got the bins with shavings and all the lights out and getting ready!!"

I also made him meatloaf last night (his favorite) and he said "You know if you didn't know how to make a good meatloaf, I don't now if this marriage would have lasted!"

I swear he's like a 2 year old with some of the stuff he says

Sorry, friends I can't cope with this. I'm over 300 posts behind and getting behinder by the moment 'cause BYC is FUBAR, AGAIN!

We've just been goofing off, you didn't miss much. Heather lost a bunch of her chickens to her dog, and Dan's incubator went down to something like 53F in lockdown, and yet he's managed to reduce rescue (stupid BYC autocorrect!) the hatch - they keep coming and coming... And there's a lot of really weird disturbing stuff about Elsa from Frozen on the Internet.

Number 7 is out! Number 8 isn't far behind.

A day 14 (well, 13.5

Yeah, but it's so cool, too!!! Congrats on the happy swimmers!

I cleaned out the brooder for the 4 week olds - I had forgotten what a "boredom buster" new bedding is for chicks - every single piece of pine shavings was a new potential toy.

Break over - back outside for more chores...
