EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

He gave me chlorhexidine concentrate to mix with water for the soaks. It was a little spendy from them, but if I recall correctly, that stuff isn't cheap in the drug stores either. He also gave be this stuff called "SolvaKer" to put on each night to help slough off the extra scales and skin around the scab on the bottom slowly - it has salicylic acid in it. Also pricey, and I looked it up to find you can only get it from a vet. For scaly leg mites, he recommended canola or olive oil, and when I asked about castor oil, he suggested not to because of how sensitive birds are to petroleum based or toxic products. I was confused, but when I looked at my bottle when I got home (from Whole Foods), it said "hexane-free", so perhaps some castor oil is more toxic... I'm still deciding whether I'm going to try it anyway - Beekissed and others have used it without negative effect and great success. (Single application.) I have not been applying any oil while doing all these washes and soaks, but will apply it when I send him back out to the coop.

FWIW.

(BTW, his hospital pen is in the mudroom by the front door - he made an alarm noise, and it turned out the wind had blown something agains the door. Tempted to keep him as a home alarm system! :lau )

Thanks!!

I should also add that I did not get the sense from him that any specific component was essential - i.e., I think the chlorhexadine soap may have sped things up, but probably not essential, and the Solva Ker likewise. Really just to soak daily, let him recover on a soft surface, and focus on prevention. He did say that he didn't recommend bandaging and putting back outside because the bandage needed to be changed when it got wet or dirty, which would be hard to do. I got the sense of, "Well, you're here, you can use this stuff form us." with the implication that other similar things could also work. (shrug)

@Fire Ant Farm That is neat on the home alarm feature, but unless you cover his cage, the morning alarm might get old

He doesn't crow until after the other boys start, and my bed backs up against a window not far from their coops. That said, I sort of count on his morning crow to get me up - I'm enjoying the alarm!

(Maybe I'll have house Seramas!!!!!!!!)

Well, the migraines have moved my way. Time to light a fire and head to bed.
Oh, I'm so sorry.

Get a good night's rest.

I should go to bed, too.

It is good to have the information though, especially where we lack avian vets. Thanks.
