Howdy!!!! For those of you who make fun of Naked Necks, here's a published paper of a study that was shared on another thread. It shows that chickens carrying the Naked Neck gene have better meat development (including breast meat) and also have stronger immune system/immune response (it was done in the summer time, hot climate). (This goes a long with a lot of observations from folks about how hardy NNs are and how they seem to never get sick). The finding is specifically associated with the presence of the Na gene. (Interestingly, they also refer to the presence of the frizzle gene as another advantage in the heat.) I want to read it again (less quickly), but here it is:

(I need to do a readback, but I wanted to share this, for all you haters...)

(Edit to add - they do tolerate cold very well as well)

All aboard the detention bus....
LOL!!!Here!!!![]()
thats not hotNorthern cold - Beer Can raises his in upstate New York, others have commented as well, including anecdotes of the NNs actually seeming MORE comfortable in the snow/cold (oddly) than the fully feathered members of the same flock. (I cannot comment on Canadian cold...)
This paper also notes that due to better thermoregulation, their appetites are less suppressed by the heat. (The NaNa birds also had longer keels as well.) Interestingly, there is a significant benefit with regard to strength of the immune system - they propose that this may explain why they are more resistant to Cocci...

Edit to add - the "hot" temperatures for this paper were between 83 and 90F. Yeah, right, "hot".![]()
