EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Cockatiels only live about 20 years, Conures about 30, Senegals about 50, Cockatoos and African Grays about 60, Amazons 70, Eclectus well over 80 and Macaws 100 or more. They will bond with their owner as though they were the mate. They go quite crazy if that bond is broken for some reason. If you bond with one and then have to go away to college or into the military, they will hate you forever because a mate would never abandon them like that. We had a lot of crazy birds that had been through that. Some were very human aggressive because they had been scorned in such a way. You don't want to have a macaw angry with you. A large macaw like a scarlet has a bite strength around 700 lbs. per inch. Hyacinths' bites are much stronger. Perhaps 1000 or more. We had a Scarlet the stuck its beak through the cage of a Hyacinth and the Hyacinth bit the Scarlet's beak off. The Scarlet's mate had to feed it the rest of its life because it couldn't eat on its own. My friends that do rescue have some horrific scars. Check out this prison break bad boy. Can you break 1/4 inch stainless steel with your mouth?
Nope. Incredible. Sad. I'm sure in the next few minutes he was out off that cage. Wow. He could break your finger without trying.

Out in the orchard today I found these on my apple trees. At first I thought lady bugs but not so. Have you seen these before? How to get rid of them?

Using my headlamp with a piece of foam to hold egg I was able to see into the dark egg fairly well. I did modify the foam tubing with duct tape to stop light leakage.

Are you sure it isn't ladybug?
There are many species of them.
They seems like this one
1000

Pesticides will get reed of them.

Maybe snap it completely off if he wanted to.
The Umbrella cockatoo and the Eclectus I mentioned have inflicted some terrible wounds on my friend. Obviously they didn't want to do permanent damage because there were only wounds and no amputations.

Just being ornery due to circumstances. Good thing they didn't want to do permanent damage. Jaws of life have nothing on these guys.

They sure looked like ladybugs. No legs and were attached to the bark almost glued on.

I think they are scale insects, they are parasites to the tree, you can use some systemic pesticides, ( if you want! I don't use them) or you can spray on them some organics products, try spray on them 10% liquid detergent ( dish soap ) solution. 100 gr of soap +900 gr of water, stir wel and spray.

I was thinking of something like that to spray on. Maybe one of the oil type sprays

Do parrots live a long time? Seems like quite a commitment.

Terribly long.
That's why people shouldn't own them.
Some of the smaller ones only live about 30 years or so. But the big ones, like the scarlet and great green that I worked with will outlive you, your children and likely your grandchildren.
We had a breeding pair of scarlets that were 90 years old.

My DD wanted to adopt an older one from a shelter a couple of years ago. I said she should not because at 16 she had no idea where she would be in 2 years time, and did not want to feel tied down by her pet. She listened.
Needles to say 2 years on she is at a university in the UK.

These are not pets for young people who are likley to want to be mobile and are likley to want to be free to take off at short notice.
